When we think of mid century rings from the USSR this is the kind of beauty that springs to mind. An amazing fuchsia pink stone set in gorgeous 14ct old rosey gold. This synthetic ruby is totally reminiscent of the era and particularly for Soviet rings of the time. The elongated oval is in good condition for a stone of its age - there is a couple of chips to one end of the stone, but the rest of the facets show minimal wear. The stone is a fabulous deep fuchsia pink and it is held in a lovely solid bezel setting. Surrounding this are a set of embossed floral leaves that form an almost skirt down the finger. There is a final solid rail that echoes the shape of the stone and gives the ring strength. The 14ct gold is a lovely old rosey gold colour - not pink like modern rose gold and not yellow gold - a muted old rosey colour.
There are three set of external hallmarks which offer a bit of a puzzle - there is the "shovel" with the Moscow symbol, the hammer and sickle and "583" which suggest a ring from the 1950s or 1960s - which matches her style perfectly. But the middle hallmark is clearly 1982. Given that Moscow's hallmark had changed by then and the style is very mid century, we can only assume this was a second later hallmark - which is seen on a number of pieces.
